The Republican Party is Complicit

There's been a lot of complaints leveled at the Trump Administration for good reason. Trump has started a war with Iran, he's attacked our allies, sent his masked thugs and goons into our cities, increased taxes on us through tariffs, and the list goes on. And while it is important to blame Donald Trump and his cronies for the mess we're in, it's also important to remember that the entire GOP shares much of the blame as well.

Thanks to the constitution, they have the power to help stop all of it. The founding fathers made it so that we (are supposed to anyway) have three co-equal branches of government. Trump controls the executive branch, but the legislative branch is supposed to have some power as well to help rein him in.

Congress could pass laws that limit his ability to randomly tariff any country who looks at him wrong. Congress could pass laws that limit Trump's ability to get us into more unwinnable wars in the Middle East. Congress could pass laws to block Trump's attempts to annex Greenland, attack Cuba, or execute, without trial, people on boats in the Caribbean. They could pass laws to put in place real reforms to prevent the constant conflicts of interest Trump is getting himself into with his business dealings. They could do a lot to stop Trump and also setup a better framework for future administrations as well. They just choose not to.

They choose not to, because they either agree with the actions Trump is taking, or have decided they are too beholden to him or too cowardly to stand up to him.

Now SCOTUS could get themselves involved here too. They have already shown they're just as corrupt as Trump. They granted him immunity for essentially anything and everything he's done in office. They're notorious for playing Calvinball with their rulings. But guess what? Congress also has the power to write and make laws reigning in the Supreme Court. They could enact term limits and ethics rules, enforce recusal policies, and a number of other things.

Trump would obviously veto any laws passed trying to limit his powers or the Supreme Court's, but they could overrule his veto should he go that route. They're not going to do any of this, and getting enough Republicans to pass any of these bills and policies is a pipe dream. A boy can still dream.

My point behind all of this though is that the GOP is complicit in all of this. Sure some Republicans have come out and said some token admonishments of Trump, but they've either been so tepid that they were ignored, or later walked back after attacks from Trump. They're not powerless in all of this, they have options they could take and they could probably get Democrats to support them in some of the bills they could pass, so they wouldn't even need the ultra-MAGA members of congress.

So when you go to the polls in November, remember that the Republicans on the ballot are complicit, and just as bad as Trump when it comes to the horrendous policies coming out of the White House. The GOP could curtail much of the Trump Administration's platform and policies. They just choose not to.
