What Disturbs Me Most About the Birthright Citizenship Case

The US Supreme Court ruled Tuesday (June 30) that anyone born in the United States is a citizen of the United States. This has been clearly specified in the 14th Amendment, but that didn't let Trump try to push it to say otherwise. Fortunately, the court ruled 6-3 and permanently overturned Trump's executive order.

What bothers me most about this, is that the ruling was 6-3. It should have been 9-0. To be honest, it should've been laughed out of every court and should not have even had a chance at being heard by the Supreme Court. There shouldn't have been a whiff of doubt or dissent. The fact that Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Samuel Alito all thought that the text and the meaning of the 14th Amendment meant otherwise is disturbing on a whole other level.

What this also means is that Trump and the other racists within the GOP are going to keep trying to find ways around it or to try getting their way again. There's already been feelers out about blocking pregnant women from entering the United States. What are they going to? Make every woman who wants to enter the country pee into a cup? Visually inspect the woman's belly to determine pregnancy status? I really don't want to give them any ideas.

I don't know how far they're willing to go with this, what kinds of disturbing attempts they'll make, but whatever they choose, it won't be good for America, Americans, and our civil rights.
